Stig of the dump

The novel ‘Stig of the dump’ by Clive King was the inspiration for a cross curricula project for Grades 6 & 7. They studied the book, designed and stitched puppets and wrote plays for the puppets to perform.

Grades 6 & 7 led an Assembly after the Easter holiday. They acted out the risen Jesus appearing to the disciples following His resurrection.

AWANA Camp

Once all the Boarding students had gone home at the end of last term, Amano was a very quiet place to be … until… about 200 young people from 9 AWANA groups in and around Chingola descended for their annual camp.

This year’s theme was Building Relationship with God. Teaching sessions were held in the big hall, they slept in the classrooms and enjoyed the wonderful ‘bush’ around the site. We even had a campfire on the rock in the middle of the field and were told this was the first ever campfire at any AWANA camp in Zambia!

Primary Arts Festival

After a busy first week back 12 students and 2 teachers managed to get up early to leave Amano at 6:15 to drive just over 2 hours to Simba School, Ndola. We participated in an Arts Festival and the children enjoyed trying a selection of 9 different activities.  Tae Kwando encouraged them to develop some self defence techniques, Masterchef produced some delicious cup cakes of various colours, more colours were used in the workshop on Acrylic Painting where budding artists produced some stunning sunset pictures. The Art and Craft activity gave them a chance to make necklaces or draw a swan. Some workshops were based on learning techniques and the participants demonstrated their work at a presentation to end the festival. This began with the recorder group leading us in the national anthem. Other demonstrations were from the Tae Kwando group and we were treated to some Scottish Dancing under the African sun. The African drummers shared their achievements and we enjoyed a lovely rendition of Dona Nobis Pacem (Latin meaning ‘Give us Peace’) in three parts from the singing group before watching a rhythm and stomp presentation by the Modern Dance group.

Everyone agreed it had been worth the early start to participate and enjoy such a worthwhile festival. Thank you Simba School for putting such a great morning of activities we could enjoy together!

Staffing changes

The end of term always brings about changes to Amano; teachers come and go as God calls them to serve him in different places around the world or within Zambia itself. Occasionally even students move as family situations change. The last holiday was no different. Amano lost a great servant – Miss Lukundo Siwale left us after 7 years of being here. It was an emotional time for all of us as we lost a dear friend, special teacher and colleague. Lukundo invested so much of her time and effort into the life of the school and the lives of the students with her dedication to history, business studies, drama and English Literature particularly.

It has been a pleasure to work alongside her and see her enthusiasm for her subjects rub off onto the students. She will be missed BUT God is good and faithful. Despite our fears of not having anyone to replace her, God found for us two people to take her place.
We welcome Mrs Angie Dodds, who is no stranger to Amano having visited for short periods before, to teach English Literature. We also welcome Mrs Mulemba, who is an experienced teacher of history in local schools. We pray that both of them will enjoy their time here and our students will learn much from them.

A choral ode to Miss Lukundo

As well as some new teachers, we also welcome back a group of Amano pioneers. The McCaffrey family have re-joined Amano after a 7 year absence. Brian will be overseeing the building site maintenance, Sandra return to nursing duties and the 4 children join our school and meet up with a few old friends. It’s great to have them on campus once again and we pray God will use them mightily for his glory whilst they are here.

ISAZ U13 Girls Football

On Saturday 15^th March, the u13 girl’s team went to Simba School for an ISAZ football tournament. We did great in all our games and the team was strong.

Lechwe 0 – 0 Amano

ISAZ U13 Boys Football

On Saturday 15^th March we took an under 13 football team to play against the other schools.

The team was:

Goal keeper: Xavier,

Defence: Damon, Nisarg, Jonas, Frederick and Sunny. 

Midfield: Samuel, Dalitso, Muntunzi.

Striker: Joseph

Our first game was against Nsansa and we played well but they beat us 3-0, however this was an improvement since last time we played them we lost 8-1.

Next we played against Simba and we did as well as we did in the first game and we lost 3-0.

Next we played Ndola and we were 1-1 at half time after Joseph Kirk scored a penalty. We did end up losing the game 4-1 but it was a valiant effort.

Our last game we played against Lechwe (who eventually won)and we lost to them by 2-0.

Over all we came last out of the 5 schools that competed.

Our top goal scorer was Joseph Kirk and our player of the tournament was our goalkeeper, Xavier Zytkow, without who we would have lost by larger amounts.
