U19 Girls Netball

The U19 girls' team went to Mpelembe on February 11, 2017 to play zone 1 netball games. Kalulushi Trust, Lechwe and Mpelembe were our competitors for the day. We were the first match of the day, playing against Mpelembe. Our defence was not the strongest and we were not moving into space like we had been taught. However, we won the game, beating Mpelembe 13-9. We had a break as Lechwe and Mpelembe played each other but we were soon back on the court with Kalulushi Trust. Our first half was really good; our defence was tight, we were moving into space, and our passing was fairly good as well. We were able to keep them at zero points for this half. The second half of the game was still played fairly well although it was not as good as the first. This resulted with another win for Amano with the scores being 20-5. We then had our back to back game against Lechwe. I would say that this was the toughest game, with a lot of uncalled contact on both teams. Also, it was not the best netball played by our team. We did a lot of high, slow passes which were easy to intercept and they did get intercepted. However, our playing got a little neater in the second half although it did start to rain near the end of the match. I think that due to our experience on Thursday afternoon [house netball], we were able to play better in the rain than Lechwe. We did lose this match against Lechwe with the result being 11-8.

Our game against Kalulushi Trust was the best game of the day. There were some excellent plays. We do need to work on moving into space and moving on the catch. If this improves, our performance will also improve.

There were some new girls on the team; Grace and Naomi (who were both shooting at some time or another) and Rosemary and Natalie. Thank you to the team who played considerably well for the first netball tournament this year. Thank you, Mrs. Grove for coaching us, Mr. Grove for driving us, and all those who came to support us; it was much appreciated.

ISAZ Cross-Country

On the fourth of February, the Amano under 19 teams A and B ran a five kilometre cross-country route along roads, paths, and trails on Amano property. The schools that came to compete were Chengelo, Lechwe, Ndola Trust, and Life Song. However, Life Song is not an ISAZ school, but an orphanage that was invited as guests. Out of all these teams, we knew that Chengelo and Life Song would be our hardest competitors to beat. It was a good effort put in from all members of the team. However, one of the rules for a team to qualify is that all members must cross the finish line. In light of this, two teams did not qualify – the Lechwe team and our Amano A team. Therefore, the results at the end of the day for the ISAZ schools were Ndola Trust in third place, Amano B in second place, and then Chengelo in first. Congratulations to Rose, who came in first for the ISAZ girls teams [and 3rd of all the girls] and also to the new people on the team – Naomi, Grace, and Faith. To the rest of the team, thank you for putting in your best effort and we hope that enjoyed the run.

For those who have been running for the last couple years and have perhaps completed their final run, I hope that you have learned a thing or two from running in the Amano team. Through this cross country running event, we have learned that it is not a one man show but it is a team effort and although we go through challenges along the way, we should persevere until we cross the finish line. Just as Paul says in 2 Timothy 4:7; “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” 

Thank you to all who were there to support us and thank you very much to the organisers and helpers of the event and an even bigger 'thanks' to God for His hand in the event.

ISAZ U19 Boys Football

On Saturday we went to play football at Lechwe School and played against three schools Trident, Kalulushi  and Lechwe. Our first game was against Kalulushi Trust and we played very well considering we were a new team. We were well organized, defended well, made a lot of good passes which created more chances at goal. Communication in the fist half could have been better, especially in defence, because the opposition started to have more chances at goal, though we improved in second. Now due to many missed chances which would have won us the game, we ended up drawing that game 0-0.

Our second game was against Trident which was a much harder game. Ten minutes through the first the half our goal keeper Cholwe got injured and was replaced by Xavier who did really well and made some good saves, but in this game we started to lose focus, especially in defence, after we gave away a goal due to sloppy kicks. But in the second half we started to focus more, allowing us to have more chances at goal but didn't score. But then there was a miscommunication between the defence and the goalkeeper and we scored an own goal. So we ended losing that game 2-0.

Our last match was against Lechwe. In the first half, Lechwe scored the opening goal, but a few minutes later, Chandalala scored a penalty keeping us tied in the first half. In the second half we managed to score another goal keeping us ahead, but then we lost three men because of injuries and cramps so we were eight men against eleven. We ended up losing that game 4-2.

There's always one

On the whole we weren't a bad team, I would like to thank the team for their hard work and giving it their all, though we need to improve on some things such as finishing. I would also like to thank  Mr. Grove and Mr. Kirk for coaching and supporting us.

ISAZ U19 Girls Football

We, the under 19 girls football team, went to Lechwe School to compete in the ISAZ zone one, 7 aside football games on the 28th of January. Only Lechwe and Kalulushi schools brought a girls under 19 team for football. We had to play the Lechwe and Kalulushi girls twice, so this meant that in total we had to play four football games.

Our first game was against Lechwe. In the first half we started off rocky and 3 quarters of the game the ball was on our half but in the second half we improved on our attack and this gave us a few chances to get some shots on the goal. Unfortunately we did not manage to get a goal in, so in that game we drew 0-0. Our second game was against Kalulushi and the girls were really rough but we did not let this get in our way. We had many shots on goal but failed to get any in, until finally in the last 2 minutes Josiah scored a goal and this game ended in a 1-0 win to us.

We played two more games but in our second game against Lechwe our defence was a bit weak [as we were experimenting with positions] and the Lechwe girls managed to score a goal. We picked up our defence and we kept the ball off of our side but we were unable to score a goal and so we lost that game 1-0 to Lechwe. Our last game was against Kalulushi and we played better in this game. We had a strong attack and defense, making many shots on the goal but in the last 2 minutes Diana scored a fabulous goal [from out wide] and we won that game 1-0. Overall we finished second out of three schools.

A big 'thanks' to the new players namely, Natalie Grove, Faith Chansa, Grace Kampeni, Rosemary Nawakwi and Naomi Ronald as they played extremely well for the first time. Big thanks to Mr Grove, Mr Kirk, Mrs Grove for the coaching, Mrs Kirk and Laura for all the support. Our big thanks to God for the day and weather.

U19 Boys Touch Rugby

On Saturday the 21st of January, Amano hosted a touch rugby competition against two schools known as Simba and Lechwe, though we played four games against them.

Our first match was against Lechwe and in my opinion I would say that we had warmed up well and therefore we played well in the actual game. In the first half we managed to score two tries, the first one by Yarel followed by the second which was scored by Broddy. Before half time, Lechwe managed to score so the score at half time was 10 to 5.

In the second half we managed to score another try by Samuel Kirk ending with the scores of 15 to 5.

The second game was against Simba school. They had quite a fast team so this game was a bit more challenging but we ended up winning that game ten to zero. The tries were scored by Ilunga and Samuel.

The third game we played Simba. They were tired and bored from their game against Lechwe so we won that game twenty to five. Tries were scored by Cholwe, Mwansa, and myself.

Lastly we played against Lechwe. The second game they played was a bit more intense though we also played well and ended up winning that game twenty to five. Tries were scored by Cholwe, who scored two, Ilunga and Mwansa. Cholwe played really well in the last game.

I would like to appreciate the great effort that the new players put in. These were Broddy, Xavier, Kaoma, Samuel, and Peter. I would also like to thank Mr. Grove for 'shouting' at us, for coaching us and for the supporters who came to watch and cheer us on. Lastly I want to thank God for keeping the day dry as well as keeping everyone safe from injury.

U19 Girls Tag Rugby

On January 21, 2017 the under 19 girls had a tag rugby tournament at Amano. The teams that we played against were Lechwe and Simba. Although there were other schools that came for the tournament, only these two teams had an under 19 girls team. This meant that we were going to play against Lechwe and Simba twice during the course of the day.

We started off the day with our first match against Lechwe. By the end of the game, the scores were 5 – 3 for Amano. We played fairly well considering that it was our first match of the day. We then played Simba straight after this, winning again, with the scores being 9 – 5. There were then a number of games until we played Lechwe again on pitch three. The results of this game were 10 – 2 to Amano. The scores in our last game, which was against Simba, finished with 12 points for Amano and 7 for Simba.

We had some new players on the team that had never played before. It was good to see them quickly get the hang of the game. Although everyone played well even nearing the end of the tournament, I would say that Grace Kampeni played really well. She had never played before but quickly adapted to the game and its rules.

There was one time in our second game playing Lechwe that there was a brilliant play, resulting in a try. Diana did a dummy to her right but then passed to Josiah on her left. The ball swiftly moved down the line to Grace and she scored a try. There were also a couple of times in our last match that Faith ran straight through the defenders scoring three tries.

I think our lowest moment was getting ourselves back together again to take Lechwe on again. We were just from having a relatively long break between games and we did not seem to be fully prepared to play again. Because of this, the first half of this game was not the best. To go back on the field after halftime we subbed in some new players and we seemed to have a little more energy.
I can say from being on the side lines for half a match that our defensive line was not that good. I think that we could have kept our opponent’s score closer to zero if we stayed tighter as defence. We won all our games, but no team is perfect, but overall we played well as a team.

Thank you to those who left their beds in the morning to come and play, to set up, and to do everything else that does not get noticed. It was a good day.

U16 boys Volleyball

On Saturday, the third of December, the under sixteen boys played volleyball against Lechwe and Simba schools here at Amano.  The first game we played was against Lechwe and we started out alright.  Our play was a bit sloppy, but we still managed to get a good lead of about 6 points.  But we gave the serve away and allowed them to catch up and only managed to win that set by a few points.  In the second set we played pretty terribly and gave it away completely.  We lost that set something like 15 to 9.  The third set was much better but still a bit sloppy.  There were lots of times when we were just volleying the ball over the net rather than spiking properly.  We got better towards the end though and managed to win that set as well, meaning that we won the game two sets to one.

   Our other game which was against Simba started out quite badly.  Our communication was poor, half of our passes were hopeless, and some of us still didn’t seem to be able to smash so we lost that set quite quickly [9 - 15].  The next set was the complete opposite of the first one.  We talked more, our passes were more accurate and we got in some good hits and so we won that set by a big gap, I’ve forgotten exactly how big [15 - 7].  The third set started out with us gaining a lead of 5 to 0.  But then we gave the serve away and before long we were losing 7 to 5. Still, we managed to win the serve back and play some good volleyball
and win that set by a few points, which means we also won that match two sets to one.  I’d like to commend a few of the players for good performance.  Eun Taec was doing some excellent blocking. Yarel was doing some very good serving and recoveries, and Mthunzi, it seems, learned to spike quite well just over the course of the morning.  I’d like to thank Mr Grove for umpiring the games, the team for playing well and doing their best, and everyone who was there to support us and cheer us on.  I’d also like to thank Mr Grove for selecting me as a captain.  It was a great privilege to represent the school in that way.

Two older players formed the U19 team which competed well at the U19 tournament but narrowly missed victories so it is good to see that age for age they were very competitive and won the day!
