New Sports Kits

The Secondary Sports department of Amano Christian School are very grateful to the kind donation of money from the closing PTA of St Louis RC School, Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk in England. The money has gone into buying some superb new kit that are the envy of former students and a delight for the current students. Our cricket, rugby and netball teams have all benefited as can be seen in this years' blogs. Thank you very much for your generosity.

5-a-side Football

This is a great opportunity for the school staff to interact with the students outside of school hours in competitive sport. This was our second year and the pressure was on the staff to retain their title of last year, though each one feeling disproportionately older!
Primarily this is a boarding activity, but this year saw a number of our day students from Kitwe and Chingola attend too. They made a positive impact to the event. One staff team named "Don't Break!", and three student teams, "All Stars", "Chiefs" and "United Squad", all sought to win the trophy-less accomplishment of best 5 aside team 2018. With the hall cleared of all furniture, goals marked out and rules clarified, we were set to go.
Each team played the other teams twice in 12min games. Some good performances were put in by Mr Sven, Graham in goal, Chilanzi, Joseph and Taonga from the younger boys. Below are the results for those interested.
Don't Break finished with 12pts. Four wins and 2 losses made things very tight at the end.
All Stars had a hard day with 0 points.
Chiefs were looking strong and scored fluently finishing with 11pts. 3 wins, 2 draws and a loss. PD +6
United Squad were also strong and ended with 11pts. 3 wins, 2 draws and a loss. PD +3
Thankfully no staff broke and we retained the the illustrious title much to the astonishment of United Squad.

FQML Rugby 7's

Amano Christian School went to Simba school to play FQML sevens rugby against 8 other teams [Saturday 10th February]. Our first game was tough, it was against Mpelembe. In general we were a lot more prepared than what they were, but it still took us a little while to get our heads in the game. We managed to score one hard earned try by Musonda and sadly just missed another two tries. We ended that game 7-0.

In our second game we were a lot more prepared and communicated quite a lot more. When we played Chiwala boys, we hammered them 21-3, with two tries from Musonda and one from myself.

In our third game against Kansenshi, we didn’t exactly have the fairest game, but the guys kept their cool and pushed forward. We scored two tries taking that game 10-0.

Our final game in our pool was against Simba. They came on very strong and scored a try very early in the game. We fought hard and just as the bell rang for the end of the game, Ilunga made a spectacular run, right past their defence, 'dummied' a player and scored a beautiful try. This game ended tied at 5-5.

Overall we came first in our pool and this meant that we would be playing for first and second position, the cup final, and our opponents would be Trident.

When we played Trident, it didn’t take us long to realise that they did not come there to have fun, after conceding two tries against us and 5 penalties in the first half, we realised that sportsmanship was apparently not the aim of the game here. We managed to get a penalty try after Musonda was high-tackled out of desperation [by the last defender]. We sadly lost the final game 17-7.

Nevertheless, the guys kept an amazingly cool tone even though it was not the match we were hoping for. In general I was very proud to have been the captain of this team and will encourage them to work harder and harder and to keep up the effort. I finally just want to thank Mr Grove for his support and training, and God, that he gave us more than we hoped for. Never minding the scores, I still believe we came out champions of that tournament.

U19 Girls Netball

On Saturday the U19 girls went to Lechwe School and participated in some Netball games. There were five teams in attendance including ourselves. The other teams were Kalulushi Trust, Lechwe, Trident and Mpelembe.

    Our first game was against Trident. We were a bit unsure at the start of this game as we were a new team and hadn’t played in a long time. Nevertheless, we played well in this game. We used the space well and worked well together even though we lost many balls from poor catching, which was a problem we faced in every game. We won that game 11 to 6.

  Our second game was against Lechwe. We started that game very well and made a good goal difference but we soon lost focus and Lechwe then caught up. It was a tight game but we lost it 14 to 11.

  Our third game was against Mpelembe. We started that game very sloppy and let them score 3 goals on the trot. When we finally woke up and regained our focus, we managed to catch up but we’re still sloppy and gave away easy balls and so we lost that game 11 to 8.

  Our fourth and final game of netball was against Kalulushi Trust. We also started that game very sloppy but soon regained focus and played well. There was better communication in this game and that was something else we were lacking in. We won that game 16 to 1.

   I would like to thank the team for working hard, Mrs Grove for coaching us before and during the game, everyone who cheered us on and most of all, God, for the opportunity to play and for a lovely day. I would also like to recommend Rosemary Nawakwi as ‘lady of the match’ for her exceptional effort and excellent communication as our new centre.

U19 Boys Football

On Saturday the 3^rd of February the U19 boys went to Lechwe International School to play football. There were five schools present. Amano, Lechwe, Mpelembe, Trident and Kalulushi. Because of a delayed start we played games of 30 minutes with no half time. Our first game was against Trident, this was a bit of a struggle as we weren’t very organised and we were often under pressure and defending deep in our half for long periods of the game. We kept them out for a long period of the game but eventually they broke through and when they did they scored 3 so we ended up losing 3-0.

Our second game was against Mpelembe in which we were much more competitive and for most of the game it was 1-1 with Ilunga scoring for us. However, we made some very bad mistakes at the back and we conceded 3 late goals. So we lost 4-1.

Our third game was against Lechwe and their confidence was really low and when Ilunga scored from the half way line it set the tone, as we 'destroyed' them 4-0, with Dalitso and Kaoma scoring penalties.

Our last game was against Kalulushi. In this game we really clicked and we settled into our game plan and this showed as Chanda scored, what we believe is the fastest ISAZ goal, which was after about 9 seconds (we think). After this we defended really well and hit them well on the counter and we scored 2 more, Musonda and Peter making the goals. So we ended up winning that 3-0. 

All together we finished 3^rd which is very encouraging because we played some good football. I want to congratulate the team and especially Musonda who bullied the other team’s defenders all day and Jackson and Dalitso who played really well. I also want to thank the team for their overall effort and I want to thank God for a good day that was injury free.

Basketball v Sakeji

On Friday the 6^th of October the under 15 girls played basketball against Sakeji, hosted here at Amano. We played two halves of ten minutes. In the first half we did not defend well and our communication was bad, and so Sakeji was leading with 6 points to 3. But in the second half we worked really hard and managed to score 10 more points, overall we lost the game 14-13.

Ultimate frisbee

We also had a fun competition of "Bounce" which is a volleyball game with alternative rules. Staff formed a team and proved unbeatable, and the other borders were able to get involved too. Mr Anderson finished the day off with some ultimate frisbee.

U19 Girls Basketball

On Saturday the 30th of September, the U19 girls team played 3 games of Basketball hosted at Amano.

    Our first game was against Chengelo. This was a team that we had mentally defeated ourselves about but we went into the game with a positive attitude. We started the game off very well with good defence and good teamwork. A few minutes into the first half, we were leading with 3 points to 0. Then, we switched off. We slacked off in defence, constantly committed fouls and missed many chances to score. Chengelo took advantage of this and scored many baskets. So they won that game 13 to 3.

    Our second game was against Ndola Trust. We went into this game mentally defeated by the Chengelo game. In this game we had no teamwork. We scored a few baskets but so did Ndola. It was a tight game. We had many chances to score but never got them in. Ndola Trust got rebounds and lobbed them to a player they left behind. It was close. But Ndola won that game 8 to 7.

    Our third and final game was against Simba which was to be played for fifth place. In this game, we were ready to work for a win. We worked well together and had good defence. We dribbled well and even managed to score a rarely seen lay-up by Natalie. And we won that game 14 to 0.

   I would like thank the team for working hard, Mr Grove who organised the event, Mr Jarett and Mr Kapalaula for coaching us, everyone who cheered us on, and most of all, God, for a beautiful day and great experience.
